The Springing and the Dying

Long ages of human misery Were due to ignorance and folly Hitherto, while ignorance has grown less Folly has remained It is open to mankind If it will allow itself To enter upon The entirely possible Heritage of joy To inaugurate a new era Surpassing anything known In previous history The decision rests With human beings If they so choose A new glory is theirs We must hope That they will not prefer A dark and unnecessary doom A dark and unnecessary doom

[Kurt Vonnegut] It begins like this Listen [John Lennon] My role in society Or any artist or poet’s role Is to try and express What we all feel Not to tell people how to feel Not as a preacher Not as a leader But as a reflection Of us all [Mr Gee] My desires have fallen Victim to my pauses As my promises will Fall a victim to my breath Yet as twilight forms a Victim to the morning My life shall never become A victim of my death [Fannie Lou Hamer] We want a change We want a change Throughout the country We want a change [Jimmy Carter] Too many of us now Tend to worship Self-indulgence and consumption Human identity Is no longer defined By what one does But by what one owns And we’ve discovered That owning things And consuming things Does not satisfy Our longing for meaning [Bruce Lee] Here I am you know As a human being How can I express myself Totally and completely Its a process Of continuing growth [Fannie Lou Hamer] We want a change We want a change Throughout the country [Jimmy Carter] We’ve learned that Piling up material goods Cannot fill the emptiness Of lives which have No confidence or purpose Mr President, we’re in trouble [Fannie Lou Hamer] Change [Malcolm X] I don’t see any American dream I see an American nightmare [Fannie Lou Hamer] Change [Kurt Vonnegut] And every day My government gives me a count Of corpses created By military science [Fannie Lou Hamer] Change [Jimmy Carter] What can we do? First of all We must face the truth [Bruce Lee] You know what I want To think of myself? As a human being Because, I mean I don’t want to sound You know, ‘as Confucius say’ But under the sky Under the heaven, man There is but one family It just so happens, man That people are different [Fannie Lou Hamer] Change A nation that’s divided Against itself cannot stand Change Change [Malcolm X] And this is what You’ve got to get in your head Here in this country [Fannie Lou Hamer] Change [Mr Gee] Its the thinking Of remaining a victim In this life That brings you death [Fannie Lou Hamer] I’m talking about Some real change [Jimmy Carter] We are at A turning point In our history

Narrative Control

[Ian Holm] They have come Everywhere [Thomas Karat] Narrative control Geopolitical interests Are being sold to you Not through lies But through repetition Framing And emotional manipulation Propaganda doesn’t just Tell you what to think It tells you What not to think It creates blind spots It sets emotional landmines It frames resistance as terrorism And hegemony as protection It makes violence Look like security I makes complicity Look like morality Media manipulation [Ian Holm] Everywhere [Thomas Karat] Propaganda in our world today Doesn’t scream in your face Instead it whispers In your social media feed In the news that you read It feels like truth Narrative control Not through lies But through repetition Framing And emotional manipulation [Ian Holm] They have come [Thomas Karat] Propaganda today works by selecting Which facts get repeated And which ones get buried It works by shaping How events are framed Through repetition and emotional engagement That makes certain narratives Morally unquestionable And most of all It works by controlling The starting point of the conversation Narrative control Propaganda doesn’t need your belief It needs your attention Your silence, your assumptions So here’s your task Every time you read a headline Every time you hear politicians speak Every time you feel emotional About a conflict Ask: whose story is this? Whose words am I repeating? What voices are missing? Because the moment you Stop asking those questions You’re no longer thinking You’re participating

She (Picture Perfect Remix)

See, she wondered in mid-summer how to celebrate his birthday. She never knew what little boys could do until she had one. Tons of fun, hours of play, she loved when her little man smiled at her his certain way. Well today's his day... let's celebrate. Let's celebrate little man's birthday. And even though Daddy ain't around because he was gunned down by NY pig pound on the same date let's celebrate little man's birthday. And may he live longer... stronger... faster. Old enough to maybe retaliate with his toast and boast to the neighborhood folk of how he terrorizes blue coats because see, she wondered in mid-summer how to celebrate his birthday. See, she wondered in mid-summer how to celebrate his birthday. She never knew what little boys could do until she had one. Teenage years amongst his peers brought black boy pressure none the lesser. Sessions of aggression rehearsed on Nostrand Ave BK abrasive, sly and persuasive when he swaggered or staggered in the morning twilight See, she wondered in mid-summer how to celebrate his birthday. See, she wondered what would become of her son, full of discomfort His situation turned mother against child illicit occupation equivalent to incarceration lifestyle led black boy wild now he's seven years later into manhood See, she wondered in mid-summer how to celebrate his birthday. He's the black ethereal grand imperial being from the unseen light he walks with a bop, swaggers to the right, up the ave. See, she wondered in mid-summer how to celebrate his birthday. She never knew what little boys could do until she had one. 26 without a witness he was wandering the city streets. She never knew what little boys could do and how they often wanted to compete. He settled his story of American glory by doing fast things in the wild life See, she wondered in mid-summer what would happen to him in the night. See, she wondered in mid-summer how to celebrate his birthday.

10 Past Midnight is a meta-celebration—in EP form—of our first album’s 10th anniversary, reflecting on where things stood then compared to now. With the pre-order you can stream & download the closing track, our brand new remix of She, the final single from the debut LP campaign in collaboration with Brooklyn’s long lost ‘6% poet.’ Just to be even more meta, the music itself is actually a remix of Picture Perfect from our 2017 Written In the Sky EP featuring a horn section headed by Leeds genius Emma Johnson and the great Kieran O’Malley on strings. Special thanks to the NYPD for at least having iconic sirens.

The EP’s title references our debut LP’s closing track Two Past Midnight, which is itself a quote from Fannie Lou Hamer who was referencing the Doomsday Clock. She meant that it was then well beyond the point when we should have taken action to save ourselves. Rather than two minutes to midnight it was two minutes past midnight, as it felt then, and now to us it feels at least 8 minutes later, metaphorically speaking.

The title track assembles a narrative solely from vocals that appeared across our debut LP, including newly restored archival speech samples. Voices include John Lennon, Malcolm X, Bruce Lee, Mr Gee, Fannie Lou Hamer, Kurt Vonnegut and Jimmy Carter. The underlying music was largely composed on a 1998 on a beige Macintosh G3 and reimagined here 27 years later. Full marks if you spot the one chopped up music sample from another group. Bonus points for spotting the music samples from our own debut album that are also woven in both here and throughout the EP.

Narrative Control consists of another repurposed, previously unreleased relic from 2002 that’s now been fused with the incisive words of behavioural analyst Thomas Karat. He unpicks how our consent is manufactured through narrative control as it defines modern propaganda. The music was written & produced in the aftermath of 9/11—I was in living New York at the time—and reflects much of my own feelings at the time. Today has a similar feeling to me so it seemed appropriate to finally deploy.

Track 4 is a brand new remix of She, the final single from our debut LP campaign in collaboration with Brooklyn’s long lost ‘6% poet.’ Just to be even more meta, the music itself is actually a remix of Picture Perfect from our 2017 Written In the Sky EP featuring a horn section headed by Leeds genius Emma Johnson and the great Kieran O’Malley on strings. Special thanks to the NYPD for at least having iconic sirens.

The opener is a short piece graced by Bertrand Russell, also sporting a newly restored voice, with emphasis on hopes for peace. The effect of the cutting edge restoration techniques used on all the vocals across the EP makes these voices of the past feel almost unnervingly present at times.

Along with the four new tracks, four never before released, newly mixed & mastered instrumentals from the original album are included. The White Man (Instrumental) closes the EP’s running order and the remaining three are bonus tracks. That should hopefully complete a few instrumental collections out there.

This EP will only be available on Bandcamp and Ampwall. We are not releasing music on any streaming platforms for the foreseeable future because we’re fed up with the broken models and unethical investments these platforms engage in, particularly Spotify. We refuse to chase the unfairly diminishing returns of streaming royalties or indirectly support the military-industrial complex. In time we will remove all of our music from these platforms, pending certain legal & logistical solutions.
