I first came across De l'Abîme Naît l'Aube when I saw a social media post promoting the vinyl and CD releases of their debut full-length, Rituel : Initiation, released via @Hypnotic Dirge Records on February 13, 2026.

I am— for better or worse— very quick to “judge a book by its cover” when it comes to music releases. Metal is a genre overflowing with incredible talent, and an astounding number of releases every Friday of the year. There’s only so much time in a day to devote to listening to new releases. I love the classic archetypical art themes found on many metal albums. However, when I’m scrolling through thumbnails listing weekly new releases, I am far more likely to listen to an album if the art and graphic design are striking and unique.

Rituel : Initiation more than fulfilled that. The artwork is credited to Fantine Schütz, who is also credited as one of the lead vocalists of the band, under the alias Nidhmae. I tend to be drawn to album art based on color and texture, sometimes forgetting to look more deeply at a piece in order to really take in the literal contents of the art. I was initially drawn to this album due to the way the gold and yellow tones pop against the soft backdrop of whites and grays. It just feels fresh to my eyes. The gold adornment surrounding the band’s name feels regal and proud, contrasting a peaceful, expansive, and endlessly-stretching vista. The valley feels serene and cold, while the gold features are loud and eye-catching without being garish. All of these set-pieces frame what appears to be a lone pregnant figure, embracing the baby within.

It’s difficult to find any more words to describe why I love the art and design so much. I know how it all makes me feel, and this album makes me want to buy it and simply hold it, and look at it, regardless of even hearing the music.

Fortunately, I did listen to the music, and I’m very glad I did. In terms of listening to music in 2026, I have not actually heard too many 2026 releases yet. 2025 ended with quite a few albums (particularly the new @Oromet from @Hypaethral Records, and the new @Glorious Depravity from @Transcending Obscurity) that I adored, which have stuck with me for months and dominated much of my listening in January and February. Rituel : Initiation was the first 2026 album that really broke through, caught my attention, and begged for multiple listens.

The album is an immersive, rich experience. Its sound is perfectly reflected by the cover art. Expansive and organic, yet stately and polished. It feels deep and endless. It is not a brief listen, coming in around 52 minutes. A debut album clocking in at such a length can be a gamble, but in my opinion, it is justified and rewarding in this case. The band revels in ponderous (I mean this as a compliment despite the word often carrying a negative connotation) and contemplative moments. Had the album been subject to more editing for the sake of a shorter runtime, I fear the ritualistic intent would have been sacrificed. The hypnotic atmospheric passages add to the cult-like vibe that the band presents in their appearance as well.

These meandering, spacious moments offer a contrast to the heavier, more hooky passages. I tend to gravitate toward bands with multiple vocalists, so I was thrilled to discover that lead vocals De l'Abîme Naît l'Aube are shared between the previously mentioned Nidhmae and Sébastien Defabiani. Vocals tend to be the main element within a band that keep me hooked throughout an album. The two singers cover a wonderful variety of styles, making the lengthy album continually engaging.

It’s difficult to pick out individual songs to discuss. This album does not feel like a collection of songs. It feels like one solid musical piece from beginning to end, and nearly every time I’ve listened to it, I’ve made sure it was at a time in my day when I would able to do so from front to back.

I truly enjoy this album. If I had first come across this by reading a description and seeing the runtime of Rituel : Initiation, I would have feared that the album would be bloated and over-indulgent. Perhaps mistakenly too ambitious for a debut. Fortunately, I saw the album before I read about it. The art and design lured me in, and led me to a rich, rewarding listening experience Sometimes judging a book by its cover can yield very rewarding results.
