About CHESTCRUSH
Hailing from the dark, rain-soaked streets of Edinburgh, Scotland, CHESTCRUSH is not just a band; it’s an unrelenting sonic savagery. Formed in early 2020 by Greek-born Evangelos Vasilakos, CHESTCRUSH quickly channeled their fury into a unique blend of Black, Death, Sludge, Grind, and Noise, captivating the underground metal community with their debut EP simply called “Demo”. This explosive introduction laid the groundwork for a burgeoning legacy.
In 2021, the band elevated their sound with the release of Vthelygmia, a concept album that derives its name from the Greek word Βδελυγμία, meaning Abhorrence and Abomination. It is also a technique used in rhetoric to express hatred and disgust towards utterly depraved situations or actions through a strong and abusive critique. Drawing inspiration from both personal demons and societal horrors, Vthelygmia exploded onto the scene and sold out all physical copies shortly after its release, earning rave reviews from critics across the globe. CHESTCRUSH’s audacious take on extreme music brought a fresh wave of acknowledgment and a devoted following.
2022 marked a shift in their line-up and the release of an EP called Apechtheia, featuring the standout track “The Despiser”, which was handpicked by Matt Heafy of Trivium for inclusion in the soundtrack of the upcoming film DEATHGASM II: Goremageddon (Written and directed by Jason Howden known for Deathgasm, Guns Akimbo and Borderlands), set to premiere in 2025. Apechtheia once again derives from the Greek word Απέχθεια that means Repulsion and is a continuation of CHESTCRUSH’s last release but also experiments with different technics in song writing and incorporates new elements of ambient noise and drone sounds. Apechtheia received overwhelmingly positive reviews by the underground media and all physical copies and merch was sold out as well.
Now, CHESTCRUSH emerges from the abyss with their highly anticipated sophomore album, ΨΥΧΟΒΓΑΛΤΗΣ. A Greek term that literally translates to 'Soul Extractor’, and is metaphorically used to describe a person or experience that torments you so deeply it feels as though it pulls the very essence of your being out of your mouth, chocking you in your own toxic vomit of repressed trauma and suppressed hatred.
This album promises to be their most intense, punishing, and obliterating yet. A deep dive into a boiling, corrosive magma of darkness and negativity, confronting the curse of hope and the rejection of life with unapologetic ferocity. Its lyrical themes navigate a nightmarish realm of anti-religious sentiment, nihilism, misanthropy, and a fierce critique of social and political norms that plague modern society. The band’s sonic assault is anchored by unhinged, yet communicative, vocals that guide listeners through a labyrinth of degradation and decay.
With its complex construction, the album explores the absolute limits of brutality, merging the desolate soundscapes of Black Metal with the merciless rhythms of Death Metal, while infusing layers of post-metal influences. The result is a dense tapestry of horrific melodies and oppressive psalms that resonate with listeners in an almost cathartic manner.
Prepare yourself as CHESTCRUSH unveils ΨΥΧΟΒΓΑΛΤΗΣ—a visceral, emotive journey that serves as one of the most formidable artistic statements in extreme music this year. The tracks are both abrasive and suffocating, leading to a terminal experience that mirrors the darkest corners of the human psyche, designed to illuminate the bleak truths and often ignored stark realities of our existence.
Dive into the chaos. Face the horror. Embrace the suffering. Welcome to the world of CHESTCRUSH.
