THE SAGA OF CAER SGÀIL, PETRIDISCH, AND A REMIX ALBUM

I was approached by Jude to do a full remix for his astounding "It's The People We Choose" EP after I had asked if there was room on the now-released "It's the Remixes We Choose" various-artists remix collection (which there wasn't, but....) He promptly dropped stems, BPM, keys in one fell swoop. I had heard the original a few times before the subject came up, and already had some ideas kicking around for what a remix would sound like, but I heartily accepted the challenge of doing the whole project. I'm that over the moon about the original, with its literal re-defining of the term 'dark ambient' in a matter of 15 or so minutes and but five tracks, which shift and weave as if classical compositions as opposed to holding down the C-key and droning out - though we all know there is nothing wrong with such!

Jude's experiences (which he details in a PDF accompanying the original) and reasons for writing the songs, added by hearing each track three times before settling into remix mode helped shape where I wanted to take these. It was mainly upon hearing the individual stems that I got most inspired by the work. Literally, all these "orchestral" parts coming out of the woodwork. I decided to keep things simple, spare, and beautiful, highlighting the complexity of Jude's compositions. 95% of what you are hearing me remix are straight from the (unaffected) stems, in different shapes and combinations. Exceptions to this are: "The Introductory Mix" of "Setting the Scene" where I play a 3-note descending figure, well, setting the scene, on a highly tremeloed Farfisa organ as some of the original noise and fury circle around it; the contrapuntal deep melody (and an alarm going off) in the 2nd half of the title track remix, adding a doomy bass line to "The Origin of Another Mix" of "New World Ending", with its glorious synths and elegant string trills, and some pretty string orchestra support on the last mix, the "Recalling Mix" of "Someone I Once Knew".

One of my favorite things to do in remixing is take a single part that I would like to hear endlessly looped, and DO THAT! No doubt, the "A Walk Through Mix" of the title track has this irresistable clarinet line that I had to highlight and turn into the "main song", it's lovely.

I can't thank Jude enough for entrusting me with the opportunity to remix his album (I said it, it's an album) and I hope you all enjoy the results!
