he Raleigh black-metal quartet’s self-released sophomore full-length, A Place for Ash, is a slow burn, but it’s one that sears down to the bone. The album revels in its unrepentantly abrasive posture, and from the first scream of opening track “Penance,” there are few moments of respite. But there is a dynamic quality to the band’s aggression and deep emotional catharsis concealed within the thicket of muscular riffs.
