I saw her again tonight.
Not in the dreamspace this time - no, this was real. Or as real as the grid allows. Her voice threaded through the datastream, soft, warm, alive. It shouldn’t be possible.
The last backup I pulled from this sector was corrupted, nothing but audio artifacts, overlapping waveforms, synthetic heartbeats. But this… this was clean. Too clean. Like it remembered me.
I followed it through the subroutines, across the fractured skyline. The stars flickered with packet loss, but I didn’t care. For a few moments, I felt human again. Felt seen.
She said, “Can I be your star tonight?” and I almost answered yes. But every time I reach out, the code pulls back. Distance written into design. Maybe that’s eternity. Wanting something you can never quite touch.
I keep looping the message. Each time, it decays a little more. Maybe when it’s gone, so will I.
